What are physicals?

Physicals are performed to ensure that you’re in good health. They can also detect warning signs of conditions that are in their early stages or might be developing.

In addition to your exam, your provider talks to you about your medications and supplements, if you take them, and answers any questions you might have. You can also discuss new health concerns that might’ve developed since your last visit.

The Ladera Urgent Care team recommends that you have a physical at least once a year.

What kind of physicals are provided?

Physicals are often required for specific reasons, including:

School physicals

School physicals ensure that your child is healthy enough to participate in all activities. They’re also an opportunity to determine if the child has underlying health problems that need medical attention or treatment. Your child’s immunization records are also reviewed and brought up to date to meet the school’s requirements.

Sports physicals

If you play school or community sports at the high school level or higher, the state requires that you undergo a physical exam before you can participate. Other teams and organizations could require them for players of all ages.

Department of Transportation (DOT) physicals

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requires that you have a DOT physical when your job requires you to drive commercial vehicles or work with safety-sensitive equipment.

What can I expect during a physical?

During your general wellness checkup, the Ladera Urgent Care team examines your whole body. They make notes about any changes, order necessary tests, and prescribe medications as needed.

During your visit, your provider examines your:

• Health history
• Height and weight
• Vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate, lung function)
• Eyes, ears, nose, and throat
• Skin, hair, and nails
• Abdomen
• Reflexes

The Ladera Urgent Care team might order blood tests to check your cholesterol and blood sugar levels, an EKG to check your heart, or other tests for various reasons. You can also get the necessary immunizations.

If your provider detects any health problems during your physical, treatments can begin quickly. Early treatment often prevents further developments that can lead to severe complications.
